Ever wonder what’s happening in the art world in say, Sri Lanka? Art and artists are everywhere and Sri Lanka has its share of artists as well. In the world of pop culture, the musician M.I.A. is of Sri Lankan descent but among visual artists there is Sanjeewa Kumara, who thinks of his work not as paintings but as pictures – even though he paints them. He incorporates wide ranging contemporary and historical elements from East and West into works that he describes as “The ambiguity of fantasy.” He labels his art as “Non-western, western art,” though if you look at it, you couldn’t truly call it “Western art,” as in horses, buffaloes and cowboys. But the colors are vibrant, especially for winter weary eyes – and his titles are interesting. Enjoy.
