Seven day weekend anyone?

It’s Thursday. Time to gather the Red Bull, Fat Squirrel, Grey Goose and possibly the Mad Dog, all on the way to the weekend party animal scene. Except that it is Thursday and there’s still another workday left in the week. But somewhere out there folks are working on the four-day workweek concept when Thursday will be the new Friday. In such a scenario it would conceivable that the three-day week for bank holidays would lead some to have more free days than work days.
For all those dreaming of the new 36 hour week – surprise! Most scenarios under consideration require ten hour days. Some places in Utah and in Florida have already gone four day, with great results. Road crews spend extra time each day in set-up and take-down. Fewer days lead to more productivity. In any case the four day work week could save on energy bills, cleaning staff and more.
Except that everyone doesn’t quite see it that way. While hours would seem like a fine way for some types of work, it isn’t for others. In the creative pursuits especially, art isn’t like chopping onions or adding scoops of raisins to batches of cereal by the hour. What if the muse tires after eight hours? Will the ninth hour art be as artsy? What of those who do experiments in chemistry labs? Would the Petri dishes wait for the three-day weekend?
On the other hand, there would be all sorts of opportunities for businesses set up around the three-day weekend. It won’t be long before youth athletic coaches figure out possibilities for more tournaments with longer drives. Not to mention the TGI Thursday restaurant chain that has been waiting for precisely this opportunity. And really, in the digital age with our smart mobile technology, we needn’t be chained to a desk for any day of the week – 7 day weekend for all.

  1. 4 ten hour days has been used in contact center work for a few years, at least. It is considered a perk in some centers. The employees working that schedule seem to adapt readily and easily. I think it should be a consideration for any department and of course it won’t always work.
